A new study released by Toxic-Free Future finds toxic chemicals in most products labeled stain- or water-resistant, with 72% testing positive for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Items that were found to contain “forever chemicals” (because they never go away and just accumulate in the environment) include rain jackets, hiking pants, mattress pads, comforters, napkins, and tablecloths.
Year after year, PFAS are becoming the big chemical issue in the environmental community. In the mattress industry, mainstream crib mattress manufacturers are aware that vinyl is getting a bad name, so some are now waterproofing the mattress with fabric treated with PFAS. These “forever chemicals” are also being used to waterproof many mattress protector pads.
Compared to the mainstream, Naturepedic does NOT use toxic chemicals (PFAS included). Compared to other “natural/organic” brands, we’re the only crib mattress that’s both easy to clean and keep hygienic. In our great-grandparents’ days, when the straw beneath the baby got dirty, they just replaced the straw. That’s over. We now give the baby a mattress, and that mattress needs to be easy to clean and kept hygienic for years.
We solved the problem – we use polyethylene, and it’s food-grade polyethylene made from sugarcane (non-GMO of course). Even more, GOTS approves of polyethylene. The Clean Production Action also has the following statement about polyethylene: “For each manufacturing step, no core chemical inputs are chemicals of high concern as defined by GreenScreen Benchmark 1.”
